Through the liberatED protective education curriculum

According to the 2020 Trafficking in Persons Report, Romania is a source, transit and destination country for human trafficking. Romanian citizens are one of the most commonly trafficked nationalities in Europe for both labour and sex trafficking. With recorded statistics indicating that nearly 50% of victims of human trafficking in Romania are children, liberatED is fighting against the trafficking of children and people in Romania through education.

We deliver the liberatED protective education curriculum to at-risk children across Romania. liberatED has developed this curriculum with the input of individuals from various nationalities and professional backgrounds including law, psychology, social work and education. The liberatED curriculum is ever evolving and dynamic to constantly improve and change with the needs of societies. It is delivered in a sensitive, engaging, age appropriate and culturally responsive manner.

We believe today’s children are capable of changing tomorrow’s reality and our curriculum evokes this power in children by educating them to be advocates for themselves and others. The liberatED curriculum reflects the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and teaches children about their rights and their bodies, it educates them to recognise a diverse range of safe and unsafe situations, and to develop and practise a wide range of protective strategies. As well as aiming to further empower children against human trafficking, this curriculum aims to reduce child abuse. In the upper primary years, the curriculum goes even further and explicitly teaches children about the truths, myths and dangers of human trafficking to increase their resistance to trafficking traps and exploitation.

Educating future and current medical professionals

The statistics associated with the number of victims that come into contact with medical professionals while still enslaved is shocking! In the US alone, this figure is around 83%. In the UK, a study found that 60% of medical professionals, who came into contact with a patient who had been or may have been trafficked, did not know how to respond. With these types of statistics, there is a clear need for medical professionals to be trained and become adept at identifying any victims that may come into their care. liberatED is therefore targeting both future and current medical professionals. It is using their role, as a tool, to reduce the number of enslaved people in the world. Victims of human trafficking may only come into contact with the professional once for treatment, and therefore, timeframes to act can be tight and quick thinking is required. liberatED provides medical professionals with the knowledge and skills to identify potential victims and the support to take appropriate action to assist them.

Community Education

We believe that no one is too old to learn. In addition to educating children, we target their wider community by delivering education and campaigns to raise knowledge and awareness of human trafficking. Through this education, we want to further empower our community members to be able to identify trafficking risks and to stand up against trafficking within their communities.

Campaigns and Advocacy

If you want change, create the causes.
— The 14th Dalai Lama

liberatED will cause change, by raising public awareness and creating dialogue about trafficking! You have a voice, you have power and we want you to use it to fight this issue.

We are creating strong networks and alliances to combat human trafficking through multiple strategies, active campaigns and advocacy on a local, national and international level.

This issue cannot, and will not be hidden. We will not tolerate the systems and policies that allow people to continue to be exploited and denied their fundamental right to freedom. We will not tolerate systems and policies that allow people to be trafficked. We will remind people of their strength and inspire them to use their power to generate change.
